Whether you’re moving across town, or from the city or the suburbs, moving is exciting but it can also be a stressful time. Packing is usually the most time-consuming part of the moving process. Pack-Men Movers is the top moving company in the Chicagoland area. We have the essential packing tips for moving to help make your transition smoother.
Packing Tips for Moving
As Chicago’s premier moving company, we know a thing or two about packing for a move. We’re going to let you in on a few trade secrets to help make packing for your upcoming move a little easier and less stressful.
Pack an Overnight Bag with All Your Essentials
Make sure to pack one bag with all the essentials you will need during your move and right after you get to your new place. This might include a phone charger, medications, important documents, toiletries, and at least one change of clothes. It helps to have everything you might need in one place.
Purge Before You Pack
A move is the perfect time to get rid of those clothing and items that you never use or wear anymore. Either before or while you pack, set aside any clothing or other belongings to donate or throw away. You can use the KonMari method, or simply consider whether you have worn or used that item in the past year, or will in the next year, to decide if it should come with you to your new home or not.
Leave Your Clothes on Their Hangers
Save yourself some time and some work! Rather than take all your clothes off their hangers and having to put them back when you arrive at your new home, leave them on the hangers instead. Either place the hangers and clothes into a wardrobe box, or wrap them in a large garbage bag.
Pack Your Suitcases
Use what you already have and pack your luggage full of your belongings. (And save yourself a few boxes!) We recommend packing heavy items in suitcases since they usually have wheels and are easy to move. For example, they are a great place to pack books and heavy dishes.
Take Photos of Your Boxes
Once you’ve packed up a box, take a quick photo of the inside before you tape it up. This will help you remember where certain items are as you’re looking for them when you unpack.
Use Towels and Linens
Protect your fragile items like glasses or perfume bottles in socks, and use larger towels to wrap up breakable lamps and vases.
Use Pots to Hold Small Items
Use the Russian-doll packing technique and use your kitchen pots to pack smaller items, like spices, utensils, and other gadgets.
Use Plastic Wrap to Seal Liquids
You don’t want to open up a box to find out that your shampoo has spilled everywhere. To avoid this unfortunate situation, open your toiletry bottles and put a piece of plastic wrap over the top before screwing the lids back on. This will help seal the bottles and keep liquids from spilling.

The ultimate packing and unpacking solution is to hire the right movers for your move. Pack-Men Movers is here to help you with your Chicagoland-area move!
More Genius Packing Ideas
Especially when you’re frantic and stressed about moving, it can be tough to remember even common-sense packing tips. Here are some of our best packing ideas to help you get moving! (A recent study found that the most stressful event in life is moving!)
Use Different Color Labels for Different Rooms
To make unpacking much easier on yourself, use a different color label or marker to write on the box for each different room of your new home. This also helps your movers know where to place your items, and saves you from carrying boxes between the rooms of your new home later on!
Take a Photo of the Back of Your TV
Before unplugging all those cords, take a photo of the back of your TV. It can be hard to remember where each wire goes, so you can use the photo as a reference point when you are setting up your TV in your new home. (This tip also applies to any other electronics or appliances you’re bringing with you!)
Disassemble Your Furniture the Night Before
To save yourself some time on the day of the move, you might consider disassembling your furniture the night before. (But if you hire Pack-Men Movers to help with your move, no need to worry! Our professional movers will handle it for you the day of your move.)
Packing to Move
Packing to move can be stressful. Avoid these common moving day mistakes with these tips to help your moving day go as smoothly as possible:
Have a Plan for Kids and Pets
If your children are too young to be helpful on moving day, or it might overwhelm them, make a plan for them to spend the day with family or friends in order to relieve some of your stress and keep them safe and out of the way. Same thing goes for your furry friends, too!
Pack a Cooler
Moving day can be a long, tiring, and hunger-inducing time! Stock up a cooler with your favorite drinks and snacks to keep your strength up, and keep it with you.
Don’t Leave Packing to the Last Minute
We know: packing is a big job, and it can be tempting to procrastinate and leave all your packing to right before the big day. But the sooner you get started, the easier packing up all your belongings will be!
