Millennial Movers
Millennials are not only the largest generational demographic in the U.S. but they are also the generation most likely to move. Millennials move more often and stay rooted for shorter periods of time compared to other generations. That’s unsurprising, considering how millennials (aged around 23 to 36) have more or less finished college or are reaching crucial development points in their careers. Though due to housing shortages and higher prices for homes, millennials are also moving later than previous generations at their age.
Whether you’re a millennial preparing for their first move or have moved once or twice already, we have gathered some millennial-friendly moving tips for all your moving needs.

Moving Research
Research is the key to a successful, happy move, especially if it’s your first one! Check out popular neighborhoods, what’s in town that aligns with your interests, and pay extra attention to the cost of living. Make sure you can afford your new home and that it has everything you need. It’s also a good idea to look into moving companies to make sure they can be trusted and meet all your needs.
Budgeting and saving
Moving and living in your new place afterwards requires significant amounts of money. It’s a good idea to have around three to six months of living expenses saved up. Remember that there are a lot of expenses that you might have not thought about before living on your own, such as utilities, internet, phone bills, maybe even streaming platforms.
It’s important to wait until you have the financial resources to sustain yourself, so it’s okay to be patient and save up. Leaving some cushioning room is also a good idea to make sure you can handle unexpected expenses. Even if your family is willing to help, if you move away from their home city, it can be difficult to get immediate assistance.
Tour potential homes
It may feel like everything is available on the internet, but nothing beats touring your potential home in person. If possible, try to see the exact unit or home you will be renting, buying or staying at. Pictures can look nice on websites while the actual space looks different and you can check the unit for any potential deal breakers or damages.
When touring potential homes, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes making a list of questions beforehand is also helpful so you remember to get all the information you need.
The internet is your oyster
Millennials are the first generation to really feel at home on the internet, to use those web-surfing and tech skills to help you with your move! Make good use of websites that list homes (such as apartments.com or Zillow) and explore all their features. Many apartment or renting websites also have floor plans and self-guided or virtual tours. Read up on your potential home. Maybe you’re reading apartment complex reviews on Google Maps or seeing what recent movers in the area have to say on Reddit. Digging through the internet is a great way to get all sorts of information about your potential home and moving.
Tracking Tasks
You can also use apps and other technological tools to help you keep track of your tasks and things you need to pack. There are lots of logistical tasks that also need to be completed, such as changing your address and setting up the internet that can make the move feel overwhelming. Start early and work through the to-do list slowly and steadily.
Consider storage
A large apartment can be expensive, so you might consider renting a storage unit while getting a smaller apartment instead.
Consider roommates
Having roommates is a great way to split rent-related expenses. Look for someone who shares a similar lifestyle, such as another young professional, or room with friends. Don’t forget to get to know each other before committing to a lease.
Tips for Moving
Understand your motivations
Moving is a big commitment, before, during, and after the process. Take some time to understand why you’re moving so you can feel confident in your decisions.
Don’t procrastinate!
Millennials have a reputation for being procrastinators, but it’s harder to move if you procrastinate. Start early, break down your tasks into manageable chunks, and work through them slowly but consistently to make sure you have time to complete everything you need to do.
Smart packing
Nothing beats organized packing. Labeling your boxes will help you find items later on and make unpacking less of a hassle. It’s also a good idea to have a “moving bag” which consists of some clothes, toiletries and other essentials required while you unpack. There’s a lot of stuff to remember to bring, so it’s a good idea to make a list!
Pack-Men Movers offers packing services if you need help or are in a rush to get your stuff put away.
Take photos
While touring apartments or just before getting all your furniture sorted out, it’s a good idea to search the unit for potential damages. Take pictures and let your landlord know so you can’t be held accountable for these damages during your stay. Don’t pay for anything you’re not responsible for.
It’s also a good idea to get renter’s insurance, just in case something happens.
Learning to cook
Master a few recipes before your leave. Ideally, it’s a mix of personal favorites and easy to make meals that you can make even when you’re tired. Being able to cook also helps you avoid the expenses of eating out or ordering in.
Get involved with the community
It can be lonely away from home, so get yourself acquainted! It can be inviting over friends if they’re in town, getting to know your neighbors or attending events that align with your interests. Getting to know people around your new location will help you feel more at home.
