Pack-Men Movers Ultimate Moving Checklist

moving checklist

Moving homes can feel like an overwhelming task, and it can be difficult to know where to even start. Luckily, we are the experts and we have the ultimate moving checklist for you so you can get organized and prepare for your move! Our goal is to help you have the best possible move.

Before Moving Checklist

There is plenty to do and check off your list well ahead of the big day. We recommend that you start preparing for your move at least eight weeks ahead of the scheduled move.

Make a To-Do List

The first step is to make your own to-do list of what needs to be done before, during, and after your move. Everyone’s list will be a little different!

Organize Your Documents

It is a good idea to organize any documents you might need in a folder or Google Doc, to ensure that you don’t lose track of anything important on the day of your move.

Hire Movers

It’s time to choose the right moving company you trust to assist you with your move. If you’re in the Chicagoland area, choose Pack-Men Movers! We are the best movers in Chicago.

Measure Your Furniture

Measure your furniture and any other large items to ensure that they will fit in your new space. It is also a great idea to plan out ahead of time where your furniture will go in your new home, so you can have your movers place it for you properly. That way, you avoid having to move large pieces of furniture on your own at a later date.

Gather Packing Supplies

Before you start packing, make sure you have all the supplies you will need to properly pack up your belongings. Some items you might need for your upcoming move include boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, tissue papers, labels for boxes, and markers.

Pack a Moving Day Bag

Make sure to throw any essentials you might need for the big day in a bag: a change of clothes, medication, snacks, phone chargers, your laptop, and any valuables you prefer to have with you as you move.

Start Packing!

Sometimes the hardest part of moving is getting started. Start packing up at least one box! Begin with anything that you don’t use on a daily basis. (Or, utilize our packing and unpacking services and we will do all the hard work for you!)

Gather and Donate Unwanted Items

A move is the perfect time to get rid of things you no longer use. Consider donating furniture and clothes that are still in good condition to a local shelter or another worthy cause. (And don’t forget to get a receipt! Many items you donate can qualify for a tax deduction.)

Notify the Post Office, Utilities, and Subscriptions

The U.S. Post Office has an official change-of-address form. Don’t forget to notify any other important people and agencies of your move, including your utilities like your cable and internet provider, your trash services, water company, and electric company.

Moving Guide for Moving Day

moving day

The big day is here! Here’s your checklist of things to do on moving day (and be sure to avoid these common moving day mistakes, too.)

Wake Up Early

The big day isn’t the day to hit snooze! Make sure to get up early and get ready for your move.

Eat a Big Breakfast

Fuel up for the big day and eat a big meal before you get going with your move. The day will be busy and you might not have time to grab a meal till late!

Make a Plan for Pets and Children

Moving day can be hectic and overwhelming, especially with your pets and children underfoot. It is usually best to make an alternative plan for children and your dog, cat, fish, etc. to stay with family or friends on moving day to avoid additional stress.

Get Some Cash

It’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for moving day in order to tip your movers or for any unexpected needs or emergencies.

Clear a Safe Path

Ensure that there is a clear, safe path from your home to the moving van so that no one trips or gets hurt. If you live in an apartment building, this might mean reserving an elevator or a stairwell for your use for a few hours in order to complete your move!

Moving Strategies for After Your Move

Moving strategies

Congratulations on your successful move and your new home! However, the work isn’t done quite yet. There are still some tasks to take care of, even after your belongings are all in your new home.

Make Time to Enjoy Your New Home

Don’t forget to make some time to explore your new neighborhood and enjoy your new home!

Schedule a Housewarming Party

A housewarming party is a great way to meet your new neighbors – and it also helps you set a deadline for unpacking.

Go Grocery Shopping

You will need to stock your new kitchen with all the essentials right away! Head to your new local grocery store and get everything you will need.
